Can't get enough of silverchair? Here's more random stuff for you to read.
- Remember how Courtney Love found Daniel backstage at the 1995 Big Day Out, and wasn't very nice to silverchair in her onstage banter? Oddly enough, it seems that when Hole and silverchair played Edgefest together, *Daniel* made a few jokes about Hole whereas *Courtney* was the one who behaved herself! (Don't get me wrong, she's very cool, it's just that...aargh well you know what I mean!)
- In an Edgefest interview, Melissa Auf der Maur (who was still in Hole at the time) said, among other things, "...Daniel's gotten very cuuuuute." She, Courtney, and Sammy Lee were not only seen, but photographed watching the 'chair's set from backstage.
- And some sharp-eyed Canadians spotted members of both bands hanging out together on a day off...hmmm, does that mean they're all friends now?
- If you watch the Papa Roach video for "Last Resort," near the very beginning you can see a silverchair poster (circa 1996) on the wall behind the long-haired guy. It's the one with the red chairs in the background and the band chilling out on the floor.
- Ever listen to, say, Weird Al Yankovic and wonder when someone's going to make fun of a silverchair song? Well, guess what? In 1995 or thereabouts, a parody band called "silverpram" released an EP called Frogstamp, which included two versions of Tomorrow (one with a little kid singing it), another song, and a silly bonus track. (I don't have the CD myself, that's just what I was told about it.)
- The short-lived VH1 show Mixology, which mixed up song clips and video clips on different themes, featured snippets of silverchair videos in an episode featuring Australia. Shots taken from the videos for Tomorrow, Israel's Son, and Pure Massacre were included, as was part of the song Tomorrow. For some reason the editors intercut Chris with a koala, and Daniel with a tropical bird, a factory, and Natalie Imbruglia. (Which is really pretty freaky, considering the episode was aired in April 1999, and less than a year later, they were dating.)
- Speaking of VH1, another show, Rock and Roll Jeopardy (you can guess what that's about!) also featured silverchair in a celebrity episode (one of the players was Art Alexakis, whose band, Everclear, opened for silverchair in 1995). For 1000 points (you play for points, not dollars) in the Double Jeopardy round, under "Metal Music" (a type of metal was in all the answers, it's not a reference to the genre), the question was: "Anguished anthems like Suicidal Dream are the trademark of this trio of Aussie teenagers." Oddly enough, Art was *not* the player who got this one. It was what's-her-name from the Go-Gos, I think...
- Now, on to MTV! The intro to Freak was used in a 1997 episode of Daria (my favorite cartoon!). If I remember correctly (I may be a Daria fanatic, but it's been a while), it was in the very first episode, "Esteemsters."
- "Point of View" was played during the credits of a fourth-season episode (since I hadn't bought the CD yet, I didn't recognize it at the time).
- And a snippet from Ana's Song was used in the July 26, 2000 episode of the show, right after Sandi suggested Quinn was being stalked.
- And if you've ever watched Daria, you've seen the alter egos - goofy little stills shown next to the show's credits. (You know, the ones that show Jane Lane as Rapunzel or Quinn as Hello Kitty.) Remember Snaz, the tattooed-everywhere guy from the Freak single cover and (supposedly) the Abuse Me video (which I've never seen myself)? He seems to have inspired one of Jake Morgendorffer's alter egos. No, really, during seasons 3 and 4 I kept seeing him covered with similar tattoos (he kept his trademark polka dot boxers, though)! Gee, I wonder what the Daria staff has been listening to for all this time!
- "Black Tangled Heart" was never played on the Neon Ballroom tour. If you don't believe me, just try and find a set list with the song on it. (And if you do find one, email me, okay? I try to keep my info correct...)
- "Pure Massacre" came in at #35 on radio station 91X's Top 91 of '95 countdown, and "Tomorrow" edged out "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins to become #10. Thanks to those of you who were nice and helped me stuff the ballots (you guys all rock!), "Ana's Song (Open Fire)" came in at #55 on the Top 91 of '99 countdown. (If you really want to do something nice for me and the other chairheads around here, you could contact 91X and ask them to play some silverchair. I'd appreciate it - they're probably sick of hearing from me!)
- Remember Dan's white T-shirt that said "Nobody Knows I'm A Lesbian" in blue letters? Well, when I was browsing in Hot Topic late in 1999, I saw some white stickers that said "Nobody Knows I'm A Lesbian" in blue letters. Gee, I wonder who could have inspired *that*?
- The goofy little drum solo at the end of "Cicada" is played not by Ben, but by Josh Shirley (producer Kevin Shirley's son, who was 7 at the time). Here's a rough translation of the rapid-fire dialogue following the drum bit:
(Everyone cracks up)
Kevin (to Josh): Very good.
(Daniel's laughing, Ben's screaming)
Kevin (to band): Okay, let's do it again, from the top.
Band: Okay, okay, yeah... (Webmaster's note: I know it sounds a bit different, but who can really tell anyway?)
Kevin: Got two sticks, Ben?
Ben: Yeah.
Kevin: Okay, count it out again, guys.
Band: One, two, three, four!
- Beavis and Butthead, according to someone I know who watched the show regularly, also made fun of the "Freak" video. She could only remember one line, but it's a doozy: "Does, like, Daniel suck his John?" - Beavis
- Speaking of music videos, the actress from Ana's Song has gone on to appear on the Aussie show Breakers, and the guy from the Emotion Sickness video has been spotted in an Australian Yellow Pages ad. Just thought you'd like to know that...
- Daniel once claimed his silver guitar got damaged when "an army of prawns" attacked the tour bus and made up a bizarre little story about exactly how it happened. Daniel's brother Heath, who I hear is a little bizarre himself, is in a band called Army of Prawns. Don't you just wonder how their little sister Chelsea is going to turn out? :)
