Goo Goo Dolls Uninjured In Italian Plane Mishap

The Goo Goo Dolls were three of 30 passengers aboard a military plane that skidded off a
runway at Naval Air Station Sigonella on the Italian island of Sicily on Sunday (Dec. 19).
Severe thunderstorms caused the pilots of the U.S. Naval-operated DC-9 to abort two
landing attempts before a successful touchdown quickly turned into a near-disaster when
the plane slid off the runway and back on again, causing damage to the landing gear and
wing.
Other than a few bumps and bruises, no serious injuries occurred as a result of the mishap.
"We were relieved that the band and other passengers were uninjured," said Lt. Cappy
Surette, base spokesman, in a statement issued by the band's publicist, Mary Melia. "Our
sailors and their families greatly appreciated the band taking the time to play for us, and
we want to see them get home safely."
The Goo Goo Dolls were returning from a gig at Tuzla Air Force Base in Bosnia, the last
stop on their current European military Christmas tour (allstar, Nov. 17 ). If they aren't too
frightened to fly again, the band is next scheduled to play in Times Square as part of
MTV's Millennium celebration on Dec. 31.
