There are a few popular Bebop tunings:
The most commonly used is C7 Bebop also known as
C/F Bebop is similar to the regular
C solo tuning except the first of the double 'C's blown on holes 4, 8, 12
have been retuned to Bb, and pushing the slide in whilst blowing those holes
gets a B. This means you can play in C major and F major without using the
slide which is where C/F Bebop originated. C7 Bebop describes the
dominant blow chord which distinguishes the layout from others.
The second variation Alternate C6 Bebop
retunes blow holes 4, 8, 12 to A, and pushing the slide in whilst
blowing those holes gets a Bb. C6 Bebop describes the
major 6 blow chord which distinguishes the layout from others.
This layout is used by William Gallison.
Another variation of C7 Bebop starts on the fifth of the
key of the layout ie. C7/G Bebop is the same
layout as C7 Bebop except you get the range of a G chromatic
starting G below middle C, moving the layout two holes to the right
(middle C is found on blow hole 2). Also on blow hole 12 slide in you get a high G
instead of F. This layout gives you a practical range (similar to a violin) and
enables you to play many Jazz standards around middle C without having to transpose
certain leading notes up an octave.
Naturally any of these layouts are available in any common chromatic harmonica key.
For instance you may want both C7/G Bebop and
F7/C Bebop because the layouts are the same,
but F7/C has the range of a regular C or Tenor C chromatic harmonica
and is an F transposed instrument like a trumpet.
