Best Of Backstreet '99
Hi there!! Amanda (Into The Millennium) & Carisa (author of Love Will Find A Way) put together what is the Best of Backstreet '99.
Check out what we think rocked this year. Over the last few months we put this together. Adding more & more all the time. Who had the best style? What was the best video? Who changed the most? What was the best song? These questions will be answered so keep reading and see what we think was The Best Of Backstreet '99!!!
Amanda : Kevin or Howie. Last year and the years before they hardly sang which upset me because they have amazing voices. They sing much more on Millennium which I love. Not many people have heard their solos unless you seen the Orlando show, and I always listen to them. They both look incredible.
Carisa : Nick shined the most this year. I mean, come on...he's growing up! His voice has matured so much, he had his solo on the album. All this and he's the youngest of the group! So, although Nick is my answer, I will make an argument for Kevin here...Kevin just has so much more presence than he did last year. Not only singing wise on the album, in which he has immeasurable more solos than he did on the last album, but he's getting the recognition he
deserves in other facets of his career. Modeling for Versace and a nod for Sexiest Man Alive...way to go Kev!
Amanda : The best song was I Want It That Way. Everywhere you turned people were singing to it whether they liked BSB or not. It was the most played song on the radio and showed all of their wondeful voices because of the solo parts in it. Can't get enough of that song. =)
Carisa : Best song...that would have to be "I Want It That Way". Among the three songs they released this year this was my favorite. I remember the first time I heard it on the radio, the first thing I noticed was how much their voices had matured. I also took note
of how EVERY one of them had a solo, which is the coolest thing...all of them together, that's what makes a group! But I just love everything about this song. It has a good beat, it's fun to sing and it's such a group effort!
Amanda: Nick. Defiantly Nick. The braids he had on for the Disney show in NY were awesome. I loved 'em, I wish he'd have them more often, but I gotta say I love his blonde hair....
Carisa: OK, no question about the hairstyle...Nick. Love it all the time, and I don't care what anyone says...I LOVED those braids! I love that boy's hair so much...
Amanda: The best video was Larger Than Life. The effects in the video were awesome, the dance moves rocked, and each of the rooms that they were in are the bomb. That is the best video yet. Great concept.
Carisa: This is a toughie. I'm gonna go with Larger Than Life, cause the concept was so cool. My favorite part actually is the beginning, where you can see the spaceship and hear snippets of their old songs. I like Nick when he has on his "robot" outfit, but (sorry Manders!) I wasn't crazy about the black leather. Something about it I didn't like, but in general the outfits were good and the concept rocked!
Amanda: AJ and that short cropped top. That caught my eye right away and AJ totally pulled it off. No one but AJ could. Many people didn't like it but that showed off that nice body of his alright!!
Carisa: Craziest outfit would be from the Larger Than Life Video. AJ's outfit consisting of the black leather pants and the "not overly big" =) see through black shirt that barely covered his chest. That was pretty out there, but not in a bad way! He pulled it off nicely!
Amanda: The black leather. No comment needed. =)
Carisa: I think the coolest outfit was either AJ's in The Orlando Concert Video (Backstreet Boys Homecoming: Live in Orlando) or Nick's outfit to the MTV Video Music Awards (Sept. '99). I know there wasn't anything too special about AJ's outfit in the Orlando video (the green pants and see through black shirt), but I think it looked really good on him and I love pants like that! It looked really good on him too. Nick's outfit to the VMA's I liked because it was very "mature-looking" and the earthy tones went so well with his slightly messy/tousled long blonde locks. I couldn't take my eyes off him that night (but then again, what's new?)
Amanda: Nick. His voice really matured from last year and so has his body. Did you see those arms on him!? Nice and buff!
Carisa: Hmm...who changed the most? This one is kinda tough. I'm gonna say Nick, once again because of the age factor. He's maturing so much, musically and personally. It must be hard to grow up doing what he did, but he did it...and he's very mature for his age, but still knows how to have fun. I think watching interviews and reading the Millennium thank-you's,
Nick's answers to questions, thoughts and ideas have matured a lot. He's still fun, but is definitely not the same "Nick" he was a year ago.
Amanda: Millennium. Their best album yet. That was the only CD in my CD player and still is. You can never get tired of it.
Carisa:The whole CD!!! No really, off the Millennium CD the song I have listened to the most would probably be "Don't Wanna Lose You Now". I love that song so much, repeat, repeat, repeat!!!
Amanda:Don't Wanna Lose You Now. It is such a sweet love song and they sound absolutely wonderful on it. Nick's voice in the first voice is so incredible and the chorus is great.
Carisa:Best song off Millennium is "Don't Wanna Lose You Now"...my favorite, although there are some that run a dangerously close second such as "I Want It That Way", "Show Me The Meaning" and "No One Else Comes Close"...which I think has a completely
different flavor than any song on the album.
Amanda:Nick. Like I said before his body just lookes great!! He has some muscles...boy does he have muscles...whoa. Nick is on fire....and he's making me melt. They all have a body to die for but AJ is way too skinny to me. Brian, Howie, and Kevin have awesome bodies too, but Nick's is perfect to me. It's just right and I wouldn't want it any other way.
Carisa: I like Nick's body the best. I think they all have great bodies (how could you not with all the dancing they do?!), but Kevin and Howie are more built than I normally like. AJ is a little smaller than I like, as is Brian. So, that's conveniently leaves Nick. I do like his body the best though, that built-but-not-too-built body, not too little, not too big. Definitely the way
to go =)
Amanda:Kevin. No one really heard his voice until Millennium. His voice is just amazing and I'm glad to hear more of it!
Carisa:Nick's voice shined because it was so much more mature. If you listen to the first or even second album, then this one you can hear the difference. He really has one of the strongest, most beautiful voices I have ever heard in my life (and I'm not just saying that). However, I must once again comment on Kevin's voice, which some fans have not gotten a chance to hear a lot of. With solos on a number of songs, including the largely popular "I Want
It That Way" how can we ignore that deep, sexy voice belonging to the eldest Backstreet Boy?
Amanda:
Carisa:
Amanda: All I Have To Give. That was too cool and the song is so sweet. Nick's smile in the beginning makes life worth living!!
Carisa:The sweetest video in my opinion was "All I Have To Give", the words are too sweet. It's so humble...I don't have the world to give you, it's all right here..<3. That's so sweet. I love the video too, Nick's smile...uh, I almost hyperventilate everytime! LOL...the outifits are nice and the hat routine is so perfect. Everything about it from the lyrics to the clothes and the way they dance is sweet. Nuff said.
Amanda:When they are all dancing in the white outifts. White was made for them!!!
Carisa:I have two favorite parts of "I Want It That Way." One, ANYONE at all who knows me, knows what I'm about to say...the part in the video where Nick bends over and does his "Dont' wanna hear you saayyyy....". That is my absolute favorite part of the song and favorite part of the video. But I also like that blonde girl with the ringlets and that sad face she makes as they get on the plane. She's so precious! That's how I'd feel if I had to watch them walk away too!
Carisa:- I love a lot of lines from a lot of songs, but I'd have to say one of my all time favorites from this year is when Nick sings "If I wasn't such a fool, right now I'd be holding you..." it's the lyrics AND the way he sings it. He has so much emotion in his voice. I think my second favorite line would be when Nick sings "I don't want you to cry no more inside."
Amanda :The best line from a song, had to be....'and the world is so beautiful tonight' from Spanish Eyes. That is probably my favorite part of the whole CD! That line and 'And I, I would bring down the moon and the sun to show how much I care' from Don't Wanna Lose You Now. The way Nick sings them are just heaven.
Carisa: Best line of this entire year would probably be "My hand dumbass". I'm sure everyone knows...but just in case. Nick was giving Howie/MTV a tour before a concert or was it a photo shoot (?) in Europe and he was using his hand as a mic...Howie actually had the nerve to ask him what he was talking into (LOL)..."My hand dumbass". The line is funny
enough, but with the expression...I was rolling around on the floor.
Amanda:-I'm going to have to agree with Carisa on this one. The first time I heard Nick say that, my face dropped. I rewound it and listened to it again and again. I thought it was so funny. That was some classic TV.
Carisa: Press conference in Toronto. I don't really know why I'm picking that one. Maybe because I can't think of any other ones; and the ones I have thought of weren't anything besides the regular interviews. Did you guys here this one though? (If not you can download it at backstreet.net). I felt kinda bad for them when that girl from Quebec City
went on the way she did about them not doing a show there and this and that. I wanted to just scream at her...does she not realize it's not the guys who make up the tour schedule. They really don't have too much of a say as to where they go and when. They were all sick and all she wanted to do was rag on them. Stupid girl. =)
Amanda: Let's see, best interview. Ok, Backstreet Live on MTV, May 16 (?) 2 hours of BSB. What more could you ask for? We learned what they thought of the album, how much they actually knew about each other, and we heard them sing live which makes my heart skip a beat every time.
Carisa:My favorite homevideo was "Backstreet Boys Homecoming: Live in Orlando". The outfits were awsome and oh my...the energy and emotion they put into that performance was just phenomenal. Way to go guys, ya got my seal of approval ;)
Amanda:I'm going to have to go with the Orlando concert too. For people who couldn't see them on that tour it was nice to watch it in your living room! I've seen it dozens of times and I never get sick of it. The outfits are incredible and the dances moves are kickin! (my fave- when they sing Get Down what they are wearing are so cute.)
Carisa:OK, you might have to go watch the video after I write this...but please do. I love this move so much =) Actually there's two and they're both from the Orlando concert tape; both from "We've Got It Going On" actually. OK, at the beginning of the song right after they sing the first chorus after the transition from "Get Down" to "We've Got It Going On", Nick points out something to Brian, AJ says something about not being able to hear. Then they all
get in a line, get down on their knees and back up...then they do this like "moonwalk" thing...that's it my fellow fans. That's my favorite move of the entire year =) I watch Nick do it all the time, he's so adorable when he does it...do me a favor, if you don't know what I'm talking about go watch right now. Tell me that's not a good move =) Now, my other favorite one comes right after Brian's first line. "We've been waiting so long, just can't hold it back no more..." and they do this little "badadada" or something...and they do this move where they hop sideways on one foot...love it. I know about half of you are thinking "Of all the videos and performances this
year, THOSE are your favorite moves?" Yup, sorry to disappoint =) I'm a fan with an opinion...and that's it! Oh yeah, just rememberd another one, but I'm not gonna go into detail as to where it is..."Larger Than Life" Video...near the end, they're in their black outfits, they (you can see Brian the best) bend down and to the side, then bring their arms up in the air...I like that one too.
Amanda: The moves in Larger Than Life. When they sing, all you people can't you see, can't you see, how your love's affecting our reality...the moves they do when they sing that are my fave of all time. =)
Carisa: I know this isn't the whole group, but my favorite magazine spread of the year was Nick in YM, for the hottest 20 under 20 (Was it the May issue? June? Around there anyway). The cover shot of him was amazing, and the picture inside...uh. One of my favorites of all time. That look...man. =) but for the whole group, I'd say I liked the Rolling Stone Spread
just they were being goofy, but I also have this magazine I'm not sure too many people have, cause it wasn't out for a long time. It's called "Backstreet Boys Millennium Special Edition; Gold Collectors Series Entertainment Magazine." The thing is huge! And it's mad phat...if you ever see it, buy it. There are so many pics, from everywhere. Old, new, magazine pics, photo shoot pics, the press conference in New York City on May 17th. Lots of stuff =) So that's my fave, cause there's so much in it.
Amanda: Rolling Stone. It's an honor to be on that magazine! The pictures, you need an oxygen tank around so you can breath when you look at them!! The article was probably the best I've ever read and it was the truth. No magazine has had something to truthful like Rolling Stone did.
Carisa: The day Millennium came out (?) or right after, the guys were on MTV. They were sitting on chairs, Nick had on khakis and a brown shirt. The audience and callers got to ask them questions and the guys played that little game to see how much they knew about each other. I can't remember exactly what day it was on, but it was around May 18th. That one was good and it's my pick. They looked good, it was interesting and fun.
Amanda: Again, BSB LIVE on May 16th. The best ever. =) No more comment on that one!
Carisa: Fairway to Heaven, just cause at the moment it's the only one I can think of. Anyway, I did like it. I thought watching them golf was pretty...well, a lot of things. Interesting would be one word that comes to mind. Entertaining would be another. =)
Amanda:-Let's see. Actually I'm not sure!! I missed the golf game =( so even though I didn't see it, I'd have to say the basketball game with Magic Johnson on Januay 28, 1999. Yup, the one played on Nick's birthday. I seen loads of pics from it and it looks like it was an awesome game.
Carisa:- Uh oh. I'm stuck here. There's two I love. First is the first recorded, unreleased version of "I Want It That Way" (can be downloaded at backstreet.net). The words are so adorable! BUT, just as much as that, if not better, I like the song "If You Knew What I Knew"
Amanda: By My Side. One of my fave songs ever.( You can download it off my site) It's an old song they used to sing at concerts. A must hear song. That song and Can't Stop Thinking About You. It's a short song but I still love it. I actually have a 3rd one - What's The Bottom Line? is a great song too. They sound terrific in it as always. Lots of emotion were put into all 2 songs, they should put them all on a CD!
Carisa:Well, since some of us didn't get to go to a concert like Manders did, I'm gonna hafta say the Orlando concert...I saw the same concert that tour, but they kicked it up in Orlando so much. Crazy singing, those dance moves were awsome...all in all, the most "into it" performance I've seen them give this year and I never get sick of watching it!
Amanda: I'm going to have to say, the concert I went to. They were into it, lots of energy, and great dance moves. Even though Kevin's arm was in a sling, he was still doing his thing! They put all they have into their concerts! So I'm going to say that was the best.
