Alexander James McLean was born on January 9, 1978 in Palm Beach Florida. He was the only child to Robert and Denise McLean. He had twin sisters that died during birth. When he was four, his parents divorced. His father basically disappeared from his life.This may have resulted in his rebelious side. He grew up around women- which he says helps him understand women more. While in the early years of highschool, he went to many auditions, and was out of school often He was the weird one at school. It didn't help when he had to sport a yellow mohawk for a TV show he was on where he was the character Skunk.

When he was 18, and a member of the Backstreet Boys, he paid his father a surprise visit after finding he lived nearby. He father recognized him, He had been following his career as a singer and d BSB stuff all over his house. Now his dad has been forced down his throat.

Growing up, AJ wanted acting to be his first job. He went to many auditions, bumping into Howie and Nick frequently. He was in a talent show where he had to compete against Howie. AJ won with a 45 minute routine.

He landed a part on Three short lived cable TV shows. He also acted in many community plays.

He found that he could harmonize with Nick and Howie. They got the attention of Lou Pearlman and the Backstreet Boys was started.

Now, AJ has been with the Backstreet Boys for over 7 years. He and his alter ego- Johnny Suede performed together for the Save the Music Foundation. That sold out concert raised 27,000 dollars.
