About the Album

[Source: hereinmyhead.com]

Scarlet's Walk will be Tori's seventh solo album and marks her Epic Records debut.

The album is expected to release on October 28, 2002 (UK) and October 29, 2002 (US). The first single will be A Sorta Fairytale, which is expected to release in the UK in late September 2002. The album is a sonic novel of sorts which takes the listener on an aural journey of America's recent and not-so-recent past. As the store moves from coast to coast, questions are asked and notions are challenged which each song representing a specific stop along the way.

The CD's about America -- it's a story that's also a journey, that begins in LA and crosses the country, slowly heading east. America's in there, and specific places and things, Native American history and pornography and a girl on a plane who'll never get to New York, and Oliver Stone and Andrew Jackson and madness and a lot more. Not to mention a girl called Scarlet who may be the land and may be a person and may be a trail of blood.
--Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman will be contributing more written work for yet another one of Tori's albums, expressed in his journal comments below.

Scarlet's Walk was self-produced by Tori and recorded in Cornwall, England. It features performances by her long-time collaborators Jon Evans on bass and Matt Chamberlain on drums. In support of the album, Tori will embark on a headlining tour of the United States starting on November 7, 2002. A recent radio interview on Alice 97.3 indicated that the U.S. tour will begin on the east coast, despite the rumors. International dates are expected to follow. (Source: Press Release)

The enhanced disc will feature a CD-ROM element that will allow users to access Scarlet's Web, an exclusive section of Amos' Web site that will offer additional songs, live footage from her tour, and behind-the-scenes video content.

A limited edition version of Scarlet's Walk will include a special DVD. What will be contained on this DVD is still unknown.

Quotes

"Yeah. It's something that speaks to me. When you talk about somebody's body map--an idea that I've been circling for a while--I think that we all have an invisible map. And at a certain point in your life, you can being to look and really see which places resonate with you, pull you in. You might have only been to a place one time; you might not have even been there at all, but it's a place that gives you a physical response. And that's something that I was going for with Scarlet's Walk...I think that the songs were similar to song lines in aboriginal culture. They were my key to take me to places. It's almost as if I were following a crossword puzzle and clues within the songs themselves. And so work started when I began seeing imagery come in, we start going back to threads, because, after all, "scarlet" is a thread. And I was following the etymology of the word. Before it was a color, it was a fabric. So in old times, Elizabeth Scarlet would be a weaver, somebody who worked with cloth. And I love the idea that "Scarlet O'Hara" comes from this tradition of Irish weavers. And then There's also the "Red Rope," which symbolizes the Native American spiritual walk."

"After the Twins went down, it was a time the masks were down for people, and people were asking questions that they haven't asked in a while," Amos said. "I was asking questions. So we hit the road, it was the most logical thing for us to do; I've been doing it for so long, it's where I find some of my answers. So we went out, and the road trip is part of my life, and the songs started coming." "There's nothing that I can seem to do to make Amber see herself how I see her," Amos explained, using the first person to refer to the album's character. "She's lost pieces of herself that she can't seem to reclaim. So the story takes off from there, and I meet people along the way. Events happen that make me question what I believe in and make me question what my country has been up to, and I start searching out answers: Who are the good guys? Because it doesn't seem like the ones that are calling themselves the good guys are doing the things I thought they were in the country's name."

"Scarlet's Walk... she [the character in the album] and I are one and the same so maybe I get to hide behind her a little bit, but, my thoughts and feelings are in her, mmm....shoes. And so it starts on the west coast in, I guess the porn capital of the world, in The Valley - and I go to see one of my friends who is a, a b-, a b-, a b-, (giggles) I'm not thinking bumble bee here, a b-role porno gal. not good lighting. Amber Waves. It [the idea for the album] started coming rapidly and we were out on the road when a lot of people were cancelling. So, therefore, a lot of people were coming to the shows, hmm, talking about their impressions of the time and it was a time when the masks were down, when people didn't know what tomorrow would bring... Well, its been a - a busy year because, I think, touring after that tragedy happened and being in different parts of the country and then being in different parts of the world, you began to see people's impressions. How they saw the event and how they began to see the world. And that was really the key for me because people started asking questions like, why? Why shouldn't we ask The Question? And in some parts of America that wasn't a good thing - you were made to feel shameful if you said, "What did we do that would create this kind of hatred?" Besides that you have lunatics all over the place who just are malicious and will kill anybody without thinking about it - yeah, that, we know that - but people started asking these questions and so that started to spur on my own questioning. So, Scarlet is looking for what she believes in and who this being we call America is. Not the being that gets pimped out by our leaders or misrepresented - instead of being "Miss America" she gets to be "Miss Represented"."

The album is called "Scarlet's Walk," and it's a road trip. It's about a woman traveling slowly west to east. And it's based on real people and real events. And it starts in LA, really the Valley, where my character, Scarlet, comes to see her friend who is a fading porn star...Scarlet is me in this. We wear the same shoe size. That's handy. and I go to see my friend the porn star...because she called me. She's having a tough time. She has to go to the porno awards in Vegas. Which is where we go. We take that trip. And the whole thing about it is, she's presenting, she's not getting one. Well, see, don't you think . . . I've known women over the years. At the time, they came to LA, they were dancers; they had dreams. And they said hey, just a little bit here, just a little bit there. And then before they know it, they're involved. It's good money. And sometimes it's straight to video. I'm talking about porn.

Concept -
"...Scarlet, my character, goes to all the states, because she’s taking a road trip...she passes a few truck stops, there are cute people there too. You know she covers a lot of grounds. [The idea occurred while] on the road last year, in the wake of the twins [the twin towers] going down, and uh, [I] decided to tour, [and] started to see the country in a different way..there was a seed that was planted after the 11th, which was that people started seeing America as a soul as a being. Whether it’s their mother or a love or a sister, whatever it was to them. She was a being, as the Native Americans have always thought of her, she’s a living essence who has a past that goes back before the colonists so Native Americans would come and visit me too and they would be saying things like 'now is the time,' when the people that hold the land and the people that own the land need to come together and try and take care of her. And I kind of sat back and said things are happening here on so many levels and I just need to keep traveling and need to keep taking information and this story started weaving itself. Scarlet really is a threat, that’s all it is. It goes through me for a lot of it but then sometimes leaves me particularly when my character goes to the Boston airport and I take a little flight into New York and I get in and the threat has followed another woman on another plane that ends up going to New York and the plane doesn’t make it so the threat comes back to me and it’s very painful what I’ve learned from this other woman’s experience."

Listen -

"Well, I kinda recommend go[ing] driving with it because that’s how it was created. It’s a road trip. You can make it to Palm Springs and back. It’s a long way, it’s long. I mean, it’s a long record but it is a story. So it’s like skipping around in a book. Let’s just start with chapter 4. So, you know."

CD -
Tell us about the extras that are the CD, this is awesome, the maps and stuff.
"Well, this is how it works. So when you get the CD, I kind of figured, you know you can’t change technology, I mean people are doing what they do…so you change it’s function. So the CD becomes a key and then you put it into your computer and it will take you to Scarlet’s Web. So that’s the only way you can get there...it [the CD] will be a code, that I am sure somebody will break within 8 months but I’ve got 8 months and I kind of know that, but once you get to Scarlet’s Web there will be extra tracks which in the old days would have been b-sides but because we don’t do that anymore… [The extra songs are] part of her journey too but I just decided I can only fit so many and the maps where she went come alive so you can go visit them in detail. You know..know where she went. You just don’t know who she slept with or where (laugh). A lot of research but big fun!"

Release -

Why are you making us wait until October 29th? That’s a long time.
Tori: "Why? I’m still doing the maps."
You’re still working on it?
Tori: "Every state, every road."
