A Purr-fect Guy
A month later and the tour was in full swing. They were all in Texas for a couple of days. Madeleine had joined Kevin a week ago and was making herself incredibly unpopular amongst the crew by acting superior. Kat avoided Madeleine as if her life depended on it. Madeleine had somehow sensed the attraction between Kevin and Kat, and did all she could to undermine it. She also treated Kevin like dirt. Kevin didn’t like it but he didn’t exactly care enough to say anything. She was hardly the love of his life and for the most part he just cut her barbed comments out of his mind.
One night, Kevin was sat alone in the hotel bar nursing a glass of whiskey. Nick walked through the bar on his way up to his room and stopped when he saw his friend. He sat opposite Kevin.
“Hey bro, can’t sleep?”
“Uh, no. I just needed a break.”
“From Madeleine?” Nick asked darkly. He never could stand that woman.
“Yes, from Madeleine,” said Kevin dryly. He was all too aware of Nick’s feelings towards her.
“Why do ya let her do this shit to ya Kevin?”
“Do what?”
“She puts ya down, she’s rude… She’s a BITCH,” Nick scowls.
“So?” Kevin shrugged. “She’s not hurting me.”
“She IS,” Nick said angrily. “She’s stoppin’ you from finding REAL love.”
“Love’s overrated Nick,” Kevin took a deep drink of his whiskey.
“No it isn’t. You helped to open my eyes about Mandy, why can’t you do the same for yourself?” Nick sighed. “Look at you. It’s 2am and you’re drinkin’ alone in a hotel bar.”
“I’m ok Nick,” Kevin said with a touch of anger. “You don’t understand a THING so don’t pretend you do.”
“I know Maria hurt you Kevin. But you can’t let that stop you from movin’ on. Look at Brian and Leigh – don’t ya want that?”
“He just got lucky Nick.”
“You make your own luck,” Nick shot back as he stood up. “You think you’re the only person in this world to ever get hurt? I’ve been hurt. So have Howie, and AJ… And even Kat. So spare me the pity party Kevin.” He walked away.
A week after Nick had spoken with Kevin, the Boys had an afternoon off and Kevin and Brian decided to play golf. Madeleine invited herself along as Kevin’s partner so Brian had asked Kat to join him. After much persuasion she had agreed. They hit the first hole and Kat was the last to tee off. She positioned her feet and swung the club back. Madeleine started laughing and Kat turned around.
“Problem Madeleine?” she asked.
“No, go ahead Kat. I just see you in the sand next shot!” she sniggered.
“I told you I can’t play golf!” Kat appealed to Brian who walked up and stood behind her.
“Here, let me show ya the basic swing.” He put his hands over hers and demonstrated a swing. “There ya go.”
“Thanks Brian,” Kat smiled gratefully.
“Whoa, better not let Leighanne see you flirting with her husband,” said Madeleine.
Kat gave her a dirty look and took her swing. The ball landed on the green near the other three balls.
“Great shot!” grinned Brian.
“All thanks to you,” smiled Kat.
“Well done Kat,” smiled Kevin as they all walked on to the next hole.
“Fluke,” sniffed Madeleine.
Ten holes later and Kat had finally had enough of Madeleine’s thinly veiled barbs.
“You sure do move well for a…uh…NON-athletic person,” was Madeleine’s latest comment. Kat whirled round on the tall thin woman and glared.
“Well at least nobody’d mistake me for a pole.”
“Why?!” Madeleine snickered and turned to Kevin. “You hear that?!”
“I sure hope he did,” said Kat. “And I sure hope he wakes up to YOU pretty damn soon. You’re a self-obsessed, conceited, vain, humourless beanpole and as far as I’m concerned you can stick that golf club up where the sun don’t shine!” Kat threw the club down and marched off. Brian and Kevin stared after her in shock while Madeleine gasped.
“God, what a BITCH,” she said.
