Ok, what is a Britney page doing on a BSB site you may well be asking yourself. Good question. One good reason - the girl rocks out big time!
I gotta admit I thought she was just another teen queen when she first appeared in the charts. Ok, Baby One More Time was damn catchy but she was blonde, young and kinda annoying. But then my friends at university took a liking to her. Sam and Claire knew the BOMT routine off by heart, watched her videos religiously and even recorded a Britney message onto their answerphones. Ok, we did too but our message was a hell of a lot funnier. It basically went like this...
{Opening to BOMT}
Britney: I'm sorry but your friends can't make it to the phone right now. Please leave a message and they'll call you right back...
Owen (my uni housemate): Britney! What have I told you about answering the phone? Get back in that kitchen!
BEEP!!
We used to get people calling up just to hear the message. It was cool. Anyways, back to the story.
I kinda avoided Britney after I left university. Ands then Top Of The Pops magazine sent me to review a Britney concert in London. I also got backstage passes which was pretty exciting cos Aaron Carter was her support act. I had visions of bumping into Nick who had flown out just to see Aarpon perform that night. Ok, he didn't but I still dreamt about it. So I go backstage at Wembley and I see Aaron in passing - he had to get on stage. He was a little cutie! He heads off and I look around for some free food and alcohol - figuring I'll need all the help I can get for the forthcoming concert. I bump into Britney Spears.
I gotta say she wasn't like I expected. She had a gown on over her stage costume, her hair was in rollers and she was clutching a glass of JD and coke (it's legal to drink alcohol over here at the age of 18 - whoa! Go us!). My kinda girl I thought! We got talking a little and I met her mom and sister. I also met Joey N'Sync and his sister who was Britney's backing singer. All very nice, chatty people. I completely missed Aaron's performance for talking to everyone. And Britney seriously impressed me. That girl has got her feet on the ground. I asked her about the future, expecting her to churn out the usual "Gee, I wanna do this for like EVER!" but instead I got a little giggle and a "I'd love to be able to do this for the next few years but I definitely don't want to be singing songs like BOMT when I'm 23! I'd like to make movies and get more involved in production work." This girl may have a charming habit of widening her eyes and looking innocent and girly but don't be fooled. She has a long-term action plan and she's gonna do it.
So, ever since that night, I have developed a new respect for La Spears. Her songs are damn catchy, her routines are amazing and she's very funny. My current housemate Lisa would agree with me. Her favourite video right now is that Vegas concert where Britney gets wet at the end. We also know the Oops! dance off by heart. Sad I know but it's damn good exercise! We respect Britney for what she's done and where she's going to. And if I got the chance, I would love to walk in her shoes for a couple of days. If only to give Justin his marching orders and seduce Nick...
