A Purr-fect Guy

Kat looked up at the sun and shaded her eyes with a groan. It should be illegal for a girl to have to work on a day like this. She shifted her files from one hip to the other as she fished in her bag for her sunglasses. Where had those damn shades gone? Wasn’t it always the case that the one item you needed was at the bottom of a very sticky mess of half-forgotten chocolate and melting lipstick? Her fingers finally grasped the end of her sunglasses and she pulled them out, but before she could shift her files again to put them on a dark figure bowled into her.

He looked behind him as he tried to adopt a casual stroll down the road. It might just work, those girls might just be fooled. With a groan, he realised they weren’t and they were right on his trail with a scream and a thunder of stillettoed feet. He sighed and started to pick up his pace, he was damned if he was going to run on a day like this. He spotted a dark avenue leading suddenly away from the road he was on and ducked down it, looking behind him all the time. He’d fooled them. He grinned happily and walked straight into someone.

Her files flew everywhere. Kat watched as the papers floated up into the burning sun and then languidly flickered downwards in the slight breeze. She sighed and turned to berate the clumsy idiot who had caused such chaos out of her carefully ordered papers.
“Look where you’re going why don’t you?!” She met his amused gaze and a slight shiver rushed through her body. He had the most brilliant eyes she had ever seen. They looked grey and blue and green, but no they were definitely green.
“I’m sorry. Let me help.” He bent down to pick up her papers. His voice was deliciously deep and velvety. She joined him on the floor, on her knees scrabbling at the renegade papers threatening to lift off into the sky once more. They soon had all the files together and stood up, brushing the dirt off their knees. He smiled at her. “Really, I’m sorry about that. I was in a hurry.”
“So was I”, she looked at her watch, groaned and grabbed the files off him. “And now I’m late.”

He watched her walk away and smiled to himself. She had had a little fire and he liked that, it had been a long time since girls had dared to be angry with him. They usually took one look into his eyes, recognised him and then pretended they didn’t know who he was. “I don’t follow pop music” they’d cry, “but hey, let’s get together sometime.” He smiled wryly at the thought. As if. He walked slowly down the street, conjuring up her image in his mind’s eye. Her dark blonde hair had been tousled and loose around her shoulders, and her big dark brown eyes had held his so firmly. Her mouth was set in a little red pout and her chin had been small but determined. A little snub nose with freckles he could imagine himself kissing, and long black eyelashes… He shook himself out of the dream and laughed. Why would he, Kevin Richardson, waste time fantasising about some complete stranger when he already had Madeleine, the woman of his dreams?

Those green eyes smiling down at her, those beautiful long fingers entwined in her hair, and those lips…
“Helloooooo… Earth to Katharine.” She snapped out of her daydream and focused on the grinning face of her friend Clare.
“Oh sorry, I was miles away.”
“Yeah,” Clare laughed. “Who with this time?”
“Who said it was a guy?” Kat said, saving the document she was working on in her computer.
“C’mon Kat, I know you too well,” Clare giggled and Kat laughed.
“You do. And it was no-one special. A dream.” She stared out of the window at the calm blue ocean. “I sometimes think our bosses are sadists, making us work so close to the ocean on a day like this…”
“Oh yeah,” Clare nodded. “Got any interviews scheduled later?”
“Nope, thank God. I’m going to finish this story then I’m going to dive into that ocean and swim forever.”
“Ahh, unfair!” Clare exclaimed with a pout.
“How long are you here ‘til?”
“I’ve got to do 3 interviews, unbelievable eh?!” Clare groaned. “Hey, you couldn’t do one could you? Aww please… I’ll be your best friend,” she wheedled and Kat laughed.
“You already are. Ok… BUT just a quick one then I’ll meet you on the beach.”
Clare jumped up and kissed her. “You’re a star. There’s the address and the questions. Knock yourself out!”
