What Is Phil Collins' Song "In The Air Tonight" About? Phil Collins saw a man watch another man drown. The man watching could have saved the drowning man, but he didn't. The story goes that Phil found out who the guilty man was and sent him front row tickets to his next concert. When he recognized the man, he sung "In The Air Tonight" to him, staring directly in his eyes the entire time. Then the guilty man committed suicide after the show. This Urban Legend even showed up in the EminEm song "Stan":

"You know the song by Phil Collins, "In the Air of the Night" about that guy who coulda saved that other guy from drowning but didn't, then Phil saw it all, then at a a show he found him?"

But is this story true? No way. Like most urban legends, the legend is much more exciting than the truth. Here's the real story, courtesy of the AFU Archive:

"The 1977 hit was inspired by a painful incident in Phil Collin's life--but not one concerning his brother. After the singer's first wife, Andrea, left him, he poured his heart into 'In the Air Tonight.' Collins explains: 'People ask me, 'Aren't you embarassed? You're putting your private life out for all to see.' It's like I oughtn't to let people see that I was hurt, that I cry, that I do 'unmanly' things. But I'm not embarrassed by it.' Collins, wed the former Jill Tavelman in 1984 and no doubt hopes this marriage doesn't end with another sad song--no matter how many records it sells."
