Chapter Nine

Mike, Lonnie and House had been with the guys forever and they were truly family. When they all got to the club and saw Elaine, they could not believe their eyes. "You done gone and grown up on us," laughed Mike as they all gave her a hug and congratulated her on her graduation.

They all went into the club and danced and had a good time. All the guys danced with her except Lance. Finally, when she could stand it no more, she went to the DJ and requested "their song," or al least, as far as she was concerned, it was "their song," "This I Promise You." It was one of their older hits that had stood the test of time, just like "God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You," "I Want You Back" and "Tearing Up My Heart."

She walked over to the table and held out her hand to Lance. "Would you please dance with me?" she asked as she pouted.

Lance looked into her eyes and suddenly felt as though the breath had been sucked right out of him. She was so beautiful in the dim lights of the club. They seemed to add even more maturity to her young features.

They walked out onto the dance floor and Elaine turned and stepped into Lance's arms as if that was where she belonged, and, she fit there so well.

When the visions around you

Bring tears to your eyes

He was trying to hold her like a brother would, but she would have no part of the brotherly treatment tonight.

And all that surround you

Are secrets and lies

She put her arms around his neck and pulled herself close to him.

I'll be your strength

I'll give you hope

His arms circled her waist and as she came closer to him, he got lost in her scent.

Keeping your faith when it's gone

The one you should call

Was standing here all along.

He could smell the Sand & Sable she wore that just overwhelmed him.

And I will take you in my arms

And hold you right where you belong

'Til the day my life is through

This I promise you

This I promise you.

Her hair smelled like flowers and he closed his eyes as they moved together as one. Elaine began to sing softly against Lance's ear.

I've loved you forever

In lifetimes before

And I promise you never

Will you hurt anymore

Elaine pulled back and looked deep into Lance's dreamy green eyes. She felt as though she could not breathe, but she held the connection they had.

I give you my word

I give you my heart

This is a battle we've won

And with this vow

Forever has now begun.

Suddenly, Lance felt the need to have her close to his heart and he pulled her tightly into an embrace that took both of them by surprise.

Just close your eyes

Each lovin' day

And know this feeling won't go away

'Til the day my life is through

This I promise you

This I promise you

Elaine's fingers played in the hair at the nape of Lance's neck. She was lost in the smell of his after shave and it just made her even more light headed and weak in the knees.

Over and over I fall

When I hear you call

Without you in my life, baby

I just wouldn't be living at all.

Lance found himself singing along on the last chorus and holding onto Elaine as though she were a lifeline.

And I will take you in my arms

And hold you right where you belong

"Til the day my life is through

This I promise you, baby.

Just close your eyes

Each lovin' day

And know this feeling won't go away

Every word I say is true

This I promise you

Every word I say is true

This I promise you

Oh I promise you.

While this drama was taking place on the dance floor, the guys and girls were watching in awe from their table. Chris was thinking to himself, "the boy has it bad and don't even know it." Chris recalled the last several years. On tour, Lance and Elaine were always together. When they were on tour and Elaine was at school, Lance was on the phone, emailing or faxing stuff to her. If you really got down to it, they grew up together, in a sense.

Even Lance's Mom, Diane, had made a comment a couple of years ago about how cute they were together and how much she wished her son could find someone as sweet and wonderful as Elaine. "Too bad she is so young" was Mama Bass' comment. Chris remembered thinking what does age have to do with it? He had watched one of his best friends date, supposedly 'mature' women, only to see them act more like a giddy teenager than Elaine ever thought about being.

JC leaned into Chris. "Those two have got it bad," he said, looking over at Lance and Elaine as they danced. "He needs to open his eyes to what is right in front of him before it is too late and some other guy grabs her."

"I don't think there will be any danger of that happening. Did you see the look on her face when she came and got him for that dance? That was the look of a woman on a mission," interjected Lynne, slyly.

"Well, I think our mission is cut out for us this summer to get these two together," said JC.
