Meets Sly & Robbie
(Island/Universal)
Monty is an acclaimed jazz musician, and recently collaborated on Ernest Ranglin's Below The Baseline. Sly Dunbar & Robbie Shakespeare are the master reggae rhythm section, and are responsible for some of the greatest backing grooves that launched Grace Jones into superstardom.

Monty Meets Sly & Robbie opens with Herbie Hancock's 'Chameleon' that sets the mood for this very funky reggae-jazz album. The reflective 'Monty's Groove' takes it's cue from Hancock's 'Watermelon Man'. I remember George Benson, and more recently the late Grover Washington Jr performing 'Soulful Strut', this version takes on a calypso-cocktail flavour. Barely recognisable is this trio's reworking of Ramsey Lewis classic 'The In Crowd', and this version is just as funky. Lee Morgan's 'Sidewinder' features Jay Davidson on saxophone, with Steve Jankowski on trumpet, and this rendition is just as cool. An unusual inclusion here is The Stylistics' 'People Make The World Go Around', yet the way this trio perform it you feel that it has always been a Jamaican jazz track. Alexander's own '(Do The) Kool Step' is so right for Sly & Robbie as they progress through this Dave Brubeck/Stevie Wonder influenced strut. Art Blakey's arrangement of Bobby Timmons Moanin' never sounded so hot; this is a real blast! Joe Zawinul's (Weather Report) 'Mercy Mercy Mercy' is best remembered being performed by the alto-sax maestro Cannonball Adderley. This version even leans towards Eddie Harris' 'Compared To What'. The Trio round this session off with 'Hot Milk' which Sly & Robbie originally performed on their 1993 album Remember Precious Times.

Last year Monty released his tribute to fellow Jamaican, the legendary Bob Marley, and that was Stir It Up, and now Monty has given us this great new reggae-jazz album; where will he take us next?
