GREGG ALLMAN
Searching For Simplicity
(Sony/550 Music)
Gregg Allman would have to be one of my all time favourite artists. His handling of blues is done with such talent and flavour that everyone from his musicians to the consumer wins. Searching For Simplicity opens with a reworking of Gregg's own 'Whippin' Post' that was made famous by the early Allman Brothers Band that featured key members Gregg, brother Duane and Dickey Betts. All losers at love will appreciate the lyrical content of 'House Of Blues', and this also showcases a great solo from saxaphonist Harvey Thompson. 'Come Back & Help Me' delightfully reeks of fellow Allman Brother Dickey Betts, whereas this song features Jack Pearson on guitars. 'Silence Ain't Golden Anymore' is so soulful. 'Rendezvous With The Blues' has Peter Green/Santana influences and 'Rendezvous' has Pearson soaring! 'Wolf's A Howlin'' surely must be a Chester Burnett (Howlin' Wolf) tribute. 'Love The Poison' is a rocker. 'Don't Deny Me' is a strong strutting love ballad. Truly one of the greatest soul songs of all time has to be Dan Penn's 'Dark End Of The Street', that has a very soulful, almost gospel flavor and Gregg's vocals truly compliment this version. Dr Feelgood's 'Neighbor Neighbor' showcases Allman's guitarists. 'I've Got News For You' is reminiscent of the Jimmy Rushing sound. John Hiatt's 'Memphis In The Meantime' is given a real Allman work-over. 'Startin' Over' has that later Allman Brothers sound. Searching For Simplicity also comes inhanced and is an album you will listen to repeatedly.
