AMON DUUL II
AMON DUUL II
Live In London
(Mystic Records)
Recorded live at London's Croydon Greyhound back in 1972; Amon Duul II were a band that could sound as authentic live as in the studio. The selections on this wild package were mostly their rockier numbers taken from Yeti and Tanz Der Lemmings. This was Germany's first real answer to psychedelic rock, and they did better than some of their peers in the UK and U.S.A. Comprising of founding members Chris Karrer (acoustic, electric guitars, violin, vocals), Renate Knaup-Kroetenscwartz [pr: crowtenswarts] (vocals and percussion), Peter Leopold (drums), Lothar Meid (bass), and the dynamic John Weinzierl (lead guitar). This album preceded Carnival In Babylon and the amazing Wolf City.

The first four tracks were originally from the legendary Yeti album; these live versions include 'Archangels Thunderbird' which showcases a wailing Renate. Not so much a song, as more a soundscape. 'Eyeshaking King' features one of Karrer's best guitar solo's to date. Lothar and Renate duet throughout the 'Soap Shock Rock/Burning Sister'; and I've never been one to be interested in the German accent; yet Lothar and Renate grab my attention on this. The lyrics during 'Burning Sister' are horrific, yet this gives Amon Duul II that theatre-rock dimension. Next up is 'Improvisation' that was twenty years ahead of it's time, and features Falk U. Rogner.

The next three tracks are live versions of songs from Tanz Der Lemmings. Karrer's 'March Of The Roaring Seventies' is dynamically acoustic and electric. Major tempo changes within. Weinzierl's 'Restless Skylight-Transistor Child-Landing In A Ditch' is a guitar extravaganza; and this leads into 'Race From Here To Your Ears' that features the driving 'Little Tornados'.

Two tracks have been added to the CD release, and they are remixes of the studio tracks '(Bavarian) Soap Shock Rock' and 'Improvisation On Gulp A Sonata'. I've included the album covers for Yeti and Tanz Der Lemmings for your attention.
