Dark Night
(Hightone Records)
'Dark Night' opens with an observation of everything night time brings i.e. "trouble in the shadows, night birds spread their wings"; yes Dark Night is about night time relationships and of course the blues. 'Too Many Misses For Me' is about true relationships. James states his case for a sexier, slimmer man on 'Slender Man Blues'. Home ups & downs are the subject of 'Trouble On The Home Front'. 'Lil James' is dedicated to this proud father's son. One of the most heart felt songs on this great album is a track that we can all identify with i.e. 'Can't Get Off Your Love (heaven help me)'. I love 'Bank Of Love' for its sheer cheek. This has actually happened, I've been there, I know it's for real! If you love soul then you are going just flip for 'What I Would Do (for your love)'. 'Witchin' Moon' is truly worthy of radio play; Great lyrics and a funky strut. Jame's own 'Here For The Music' is about being in the right place, trying to find the right love, but ending up being there at the wrong time. 'Standing In Your Way' is about giving a relationship another go, but knowing that it is now wrong. 'Just In Case' is about leaving your options open in the challenges of love. James has to be the Al Green of the blues, his soulful guitar licks are overlaid with sensitive, inspiring vocals, that reveal a degree of intuitiveness. This is intelligent blues with a gut feeling!
