AUSTIN LOUNGE LIZARDS
Never An Adult Moment
(Sugar Hill/Elite)
Initially I found it hard to categorise this band; but the category is in their name, the name lounge says it all; they are lounge-bar-room entertainers who thrive on story songs, and they present them artistically indeed. All of the Lizard's material is story songs containing large dollops of humour, and wit spread throughout to hold your attention, and believe me they do. Interspersed with their very good vocals are some excellent instrumental solos and well-balanced backing from all of the instruments.

'Big Rio Grande River' is cleverly arranged, and breaks into waltz timing which is highly effective, and this is a song I imagine Marty Robbins would have loved; very enjoyable. 'The Illusion Travels By Stock Car' and 'The Me I Used To Be' are both very cleverly written as well as being well performed.

It's not hard to agree that these fellows are serious and dedicated at what they do, but I do wonder if this is a case of the good ole boys getting together and having some fun, and making a CD for the hell of it. Whatever their motives, Never An Adult Moment by the Austin Lounge Lizards is well worth a listen and very enjoyable. A bit of folksy bluegrass and country all thrown in, and something for everybody. Criticism: Would I be waiting for their follow up CD? I don't really think so; but I would love to see and hear them live as they are a fun band and real entertainers. 6 out of 10.
