THE BAND
THE BAND
Jericho
(Pyramid/Rhino)
Almost all of the entire old Band are back together; that is Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, minus Robbie Robertson and the late Richard Manuel (d. 1986). New comers Jim Weider, Randy Cialante, Richard Bell have certainly taken up the slack, and the sound is very much the original Band. Why shouldn't it be? If the Allman Brothers could do it without Duane Allman and Berry Oakley so can The Band.

'Remedy' opens Jericho and this song reminds me of the flavour Dylan & The Band attained on The Basement Tapes; that being a bit of that country swing. Dylan's 'Blind Willie McTell' is up next, and it is a heartfelt document of racial injustice. You can hear saddess in this song. Mick Taylor has also recently revived this song on his A Stone's Throw. Another melancholy ballad is 'The Caves Of Jericho' from which this album takes its title. This is the tale of a tragic mining disaster. Bruce Springsteen's 'Atlantic City' opens with a social comment on the mafia, and 'Atlantic City' is a delightful folksy type ballad with an almost Celtic flavour. This features one time Band member the late Stan Szelest (d. 1991) on electric piano. 'Too Gone Soon' has now been turned into a tribute to Richard Manuel and Stan Szelest; 'Too Gone Soon' was written by Stan. 'Country Boy' is a beautiful ballad that features Richard Manuel, recorded a year before he died. 'Move To Japan' shows the diversity of The Band, and has a honky tonking oriental sound. A special friend of The Band is acoustic guitarist Artie Traum and here he performs with The Band his 'Amazon (River Of Dreams)', that is complete with jungle atmospherics, and is a social comment on what is happening there. Muddy Waters' 'Stuff You Gotta Watch' gets a country face lift. Next up is Willie Dixon's 'Same Thing' that get's the same thing...oops same treatment. 'Shine A Light' is almost Southern gospel. 'Blues Stay Away From Me' is a song that Clapton would love, and it should have been recorded by Emile Ford as well as The Band.

I have several Band albums, and I count The Band, The Last Waltz and Jericho among my favourites. I've included Jericho here because most people think The Band disappeared after The Last Waltz, and it was really refreshing to hear them perform again. If you love The Band; well then go check this one out, you won't be disappointed. Oh yes one more thing, that's BIG PINK on the front cover, a painting by Peter Max.
