CAPTAIN BEYOND Captain Beyond Now this is a trivia favourite: What has this group got in common with Johnny Winter, Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly? Drummer Bobby Calwell was with Johnny Winter, vocalist Rod Evans went onto be with the very first Deep Purple lineup (sang on the hits 'Hush' & 'Kentucky Woman'), and guitarist Larry 'Rhino' Rhinehardt and bass player Lee Dorman were both from Iron Butterfly. Naturally Captain Beyond was born out of Iron Butterfly; the band that had a massive rock hit 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida'. Captain Beyond possessed the heaviness and psychodelic nature of Iron Butterfly. Bobby Caldwell was resposible for most of the song writing, whereas it's Rhino that really soared through this album. 'I Can't feel Nothin', '1000 Days Of Yesterday', Raging River Of Fear, and 'Dancing Madly Backwards' all attest to the dynamic tightness of this incredibly powerful quartet. It's a shame they didn't last. They did two more albums after their 1972 debut Captain Beyond, and those were Suffieciently Breathless (1973), and Dawn Explosion (1977); and then they broke up and went on there weary way.
