'Second Child' was a band of the ’90s that grew from being grunge stylists into edgy pop purveyors, and then they split.

Guitarist Chris Van de Geer headed off to Stellar* while singer and main songwriter Damien Binder sat down and wrote the songs that make up this, his self-titled debut.

Taking a more craftsman-like approach, Binder has taken his cue from the singer/songwriters he’s been listening to and together with producer Bob Shepherd produced a bunch of songs that fall loosely into a confessional/relationship bag.

It’s a melodic jangly guitar sound that recalls fellow tunesmiths Neil Finn and Greg Johnson with hints of Elvis Costello and although not quite in their league lyrically, Binder’s songs do contain an intimacy and warmth that would not have been possible in his previous musical venture.

It’s the slower stuff where Binder is at his best with 'Turn Me Round' and 'Who’s Around' being understated gems, but throughout tightly arranged songs with catchy hooks abound signaling the arrival of Binder as another of this country’s prime songwriters.
