BLUE OYSTER CULT
BLUE OYSTER CULT
Secret Treaties
(Columbia/Sony)
What can you see in the cover art? The bad boys of rock, hell hounds, South Americans with guns and illegal imbargo, and the infamous ME 262 complete with the Blue Oyster Cult ensignia, and a corpse for a pilot. Very bizaar.

Secret Treaties was BOC's 3rd album, that was released in 1974. The opening song was written by Patti Smith and the bands drummer at that time; Albert Bouchard. Here are some of the lyrics from that song; "I want your wife to be my baby tonight, I choose to steal what you choose to show, and you know I will not apologize, your mine for the taking"...and later in the same song; "I'd like do it to your daughter on a dirt road". Hell, what were these guys thinking? 'Subhuman' is a tale of a lonely soul abandoned by two friends and left to die, and this song is backed by some brilliant riffy music with amazing chord changes. And the sex song with attitude; 'Dominance & Submission'. This is BOC's own 'Paradise By The Dashboard Light'. One of the songs by BOC that is requested often to be performed live is ME 262. ME 262 comes with nightmarish sound effects of air-raid sirens and exploding bombs; complete with amazing lyrics "They hung there dependant from the sky like some heavy metal fruit, These bombers, ripened, ready to tilt, Must these Englishmen live that I might die?" 'Cagey Cretins' I believe is a song about accidental pregnancy...not sure really...could never work it out? 'Harvester Of Eyes' is either about the Grim Reaper or a tale of a seriel killer. I wonder if this song was inspired by Alice Cooper? 'Flaming Telepaths' is a complex tale of communication and drug addiction. The lyrics of'Astronomy' (as with most of the best BOC songs) were written by Sandy Pearlman. The enigmatic 'Astronomy' is a song that has strongly perplexed me for years, and it's pasionate gentleness is sometimes disturbing. I now go with the flow and just enjoy this masterpiece.

If you are new to the Blue Oyster Cult, then this isn't a bad place to start. Blue Oyster Cult started as Stalk Forrest Group, then Soft White Underbelly. In 1971 they changed their name, signed to Columbia and their debut was Blue Oyster Cult that featured 'The Last Days Of May', Stairway To The Stars' and the rock anthem 'Cities On Flame'. Their following album Tyranny & Mutation featured 'Red And The Black', 'Hot Rails To Hell' and '7 Screaming Diz-Busters'. Both these albums didn't rivet an audience, whereas Secret Treaties knocked them dead, and paved the way for past and future releases.
