RAY BONNEVILLE
Gust Of Wind
(Stony Plain)
Ray Bonneville is from Canada, writes great songs, sounds like a bluesy Eric
Clapton, and musically can be compared to John Hiatt. Gust Of Wind opens with
'Don't Look Back' that has catchy lyrics and features some delightful slide guitar
from Colin Linden. The title track tells a tale about a lover that comes and goes
like a "Gust Of Wind". 'That's Why' struts along in typical Mungo Jerry fashion, and
features some fine harp work from Bonneville. 'Oh It's You' reminds me of the early Mink
Deville, it certainly shares that Harlem soulfulness. 'The Price To Pay' features
only the drummer Bryan Owings, with Ray on guitar, vocals and harmonica.
Although simple is structure 'The Price To Pay' is the stand out track, and it reeks
of Charlie Musselwhite; and it is a true gem! Fans of Roy Book Binder will love
Ray's 'Canary Yellow Car' & 'Gone Too Long'; both of these are great foot stomping folk songs.
If The Drifters were to sing country music then 'Foolish' would be typical of
their repertoire. 'The Changing Sky' is very much like the early Bob Dylan. I just love
country that swings, and 'Darlin' Don't Forget' is delightfully jazzy. Keep an eye
out for Ray's new album Rough Luck.
