Intimate Secrets
(Mesa/WEA)
This album has everything to do with romance and late night sensuality. It is the consummate seduction album. I have Max and Mary to thank for introducing me to this amazing album. Now Rick has been called the 'King of smooth jazz', that's fine as long as you don't compare him to the most boring schmultz artist on the planet; namely Kenny G. Kenny is smooth, yes, but he isn't smooth jazz.

'In A Dream' is like a prelude of things to come, and would make a great film theme. 'In A Dream' is moody and nostalgic. Rick's muted horn is so gentle and moody during 'China Blue' that is all candles and seduction; just look at the album cover. 'China Blue' was co-written by jazz guitarist Jeff Golub who plays acoustic guitar on this beautiful track. 'Corazon De Fuego' again is a Braun-Golub composition, that is so Spanish. You can imagine Herb Alpert and Matinas De Plata performing this. 'Laura' is another possible film title, as it is late, sedate and older in style. It reminds me of Maryland, Virginia, yes very East coast. 'Shy One' is the one track on Intimate Secrets that reminds me of Miles Davis' Siesta. 'Shy One' has non-lyrical vocals and sounds very appropiate for Herb Alpert. On 'Ocienna' Rick emulates the sounds of whales. This is a truly moving track. My favourite track off Intimate Secrets is Brad Fiedel's 'Midnight Caller Theme'. This is delightfully late night, bluesy, and very sexy. I must have played this song a 1,000 times. Brad Fiedel features on keys that is reminiscent of Art Tatum playing blues, and Doug Nordine provides a really smokey tenor saxophone solo. 'Oh Calico, When You Were Young' was the one track on Intimate Secrets that I found particularly boring. The title track is like 'In A Dream' and 'Laura' fused. 'Guardian Of The Dreamer' is slightly Hispanic and features co-composer Pascal Nabet-Meyer on percussion. If you are a fan of Talvin Singh, then there is a chance you'll really love this track. By the time the track 'While You Were Gone' comes around you should be between the sheets.

Rick Braun is not only a magnificient multi-instrumentalist, he's also been responsible for bringing forth some great talent such as Gabriela Anders and Boney James. Rick plays keyboards, synth bass, assorted percussion, flugel horn and Harmon mute trumpet. I hope this album brings you as much romance and seduction, plus listening pleasure as it has given me.
