GREG BROWN
GREG BROWN
Covenant
(Red House Records/Elite)
Red House Records have a nice easy listening artist in Greg Brown, his laid back vocals and adequate backing suit his style of presentation. Ideally I can imagine the Greg Brown Group in some corner of a tavern, or roadhouse playing his style of music and having the patrons complete and utter attention.

All of the songs are very cleverly written by Greg, but one gets the impression that in his personal life love has gone decidedly wrong, as this theme pervades Covenant. This is more than just coincidental, and many of the songs are written straight from the heart during the heartbreak hours.

As I stated the backing band are adequate, nothing flashy, just basically nicely performed music with feeling. Greg Brown's songs and vocal style require no more than this. I would very much have liked to hear some up-tempo songs, but I don't believe this is Greg Brown's style. What Greg does he does very well; we used to refer to his style as 'lazy vocal', but this is the man's style. I don't really want to play this disc again for a while, just a little bit depressive, but a very fine voice and for a while attractive listening. Greg Brown fans would obviously fine this very attractive.

There was some difficulty in selecting any particular songs that grabbed me, but 'Waiting On You', 'Dream City' and in particular 'Pretty One More Time' would be the pick of them.
