DON BYRON
DON BYRON
Bug Music
(Nonesuch/WEA)
Clarinetist Don Byron leads an awesome ensemble consisting of Steve Wilson (alto saxophone), Craig Harris (trombone) and Uri Caine (piano), and with a host of horn and rhythm sections. Together they perform the music of Duke Ellington, John Kirby and Raymond Scott. The Duke's music on Bug Music ('Dicty Glide', 'Blue Bubbles', 'Cotton Club Stomp') is from his Cotton Club days (20's-30's), and from that same period came John Kirby, who was extremely popular for his classically influenced jazz. Raymond Scott's music ('Siberian Sleighride', 'Penguin', 'Quartet Plays Carmen', 'Tobacco Auctioneer' and 'War Dance For Wooden Indians') shared similarities to John Kirby's, and it was Raymond who was a major influence on Carl Stalling of Looney Tunes fame (hence 'Bug Music'). I dare to say that this music also inspired Spike Jones. To hear this great music performed both faithfully and inspired is a real delight. An extremely well done tribute from some of todays finest musicians.
