Thru My Eyes
(Universal)
Opening Thru My Eyes is the Ahmad Jamal standard 'Poinciana' followed by 'Perdido' that Sarah Vaughan made legendary. Included here is one of the most outstanding renditions of Herbie Hancock's classic 'Watermelon Man' (Mongo Santamaria's Afro-Cuban arrangement) and this features bassist Anthony Jackson. A long time Blue Note favourite is the Horace Silver classic 'Song For My Father' and this rendition features bassist John Patitucci. Great to see revived is Tito Puente's 'Oye Como Va', and this is still a Santana standard. Mongo Santamaria's 'Afro Blue' (immortalised by John Coltrane) is given a light Latin dance ambience. The original King of Cuban Jazz (Mario Bauza) is recognised here with the inclusion of 'Mambo Inn'. And finally Dizzy Gillespie's ever so complex 'Manteca', that is absolutely outstanding! For the jazz-piano novice-listener Thru My Eyes will sound ever so complex, and yet quite accessible; and for the piano-student ever so daunting.
