CAPERCAILLIE
Nadurra
(Valley/Elite)
Many reviews I have done but Capercaillie are something else. I found myself
awed by the versatility of this group. Nobody got this good just practising, the
experience shows through so strictly professional and well rehearsed, and
their presentation of every track is faultless.
Karen Matheson on vocals is a
real talent, and at times I found myself comparing Karen to the late Karen
Carpenter of The Carpenters fame; same pure pitch, beautiful diction and
phrasing that is so effortless and all handled in such perfect timing. She really
is a find, a name to remember, a sound you just want to come back to.
The
jigs and reels as any musician will tell you can be very difficult to handle and
hold together, whereas it is absolutely no trouble to these talented musicians.
Within this music there are a lot of one note chord changes and one has to
really work hard to hold it all together; this was all done so effortlessly.
Nadurra is a real hand clapping, foot stomping CD with some very beautiful
slow songs interspersed, which keeps the listener interested all the way
through this truly beautiful collection.
Selected tracks for special mention
was a difficult task as they are all so good, but I have selected several the fans
may agree to disagree, but here is my choice anyway. 'Hope Springs Eternal':
Vocally and musically very clever, and very good in the fullest sense and well
arranged. 'Michael's Matches': Very tight sound instrumentally. 'Hoireann O':
Karen's vocals are outstanding and the close harmonies are beautifully done.
'Truth Calling': Easy listening and very nice. 'Mo Chailin Dileas Donn' and
'Rapture': I ditto my remarks.
All in all you just couldn't be disappointed with
Nadurra, such variety, such talent, I have no inferior criticism to make of this
presentation; full marks...very very well done!
