TOMMY CASTRO
Right As Rain
(Blind Pig)
Right As Rain opens with the brassy R&B 'Lucky In Love', then moves into the Memphis soul sound of 'Like An Angel'. The title track and 'Just A Man' send me flashbacks of the great vocal style of Delbert McClinton. For a white man Tommy is gifted with a delightful black voice and this comes to the fore with the Wilson Pickett influenced 'Don’t Turn Your Heater Down' that features vocalist Delbert McClinton, with Dr John on organ. 'I’ve Got To Love Somebody’s Baby' is pure soul and features Dr John on piano. 'If I Had A Nickel' is reminiscent of the early Savoy Brown (one of my all time favourite blues bands). 'Callin’ San Francisco'and 'Kickin’ In' are both quite jazzy. There will be no doubting Tommy’s talent for executing great guitar licks after you have heard his chord changes during 'Chairman Of The Board'. Right As Rain is soul/blues at it’s very best!
