CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL
Bayou County & Green River
(Fantasy)
I really love the songs 'I Put A Spell On You', 'Suzie Q', 'Gloomy', and 'Walk On The Water', that are from CCR's debut Creedence-Clearwater-Revival. But it was the following two albums that would put them on the map.I grew up with the hits 'Proud Mary' (Bayou County) and 'Bad Moon Rising' (Green River). My first recollection of the song 'Green River' was when I was at a barn dance with my friends the Bains. The Bains were the band performing it that night. When I finally bought the album Bayou County I was immediately attracted to the swampy 'Born On The Bayou', and the blues of 'Graveyard Train'. Fogerty also added some great rock'n'roll with an up-tempo rendition of 'Good Golly Miss Molly'. From Green River I was struck by the powerful twin guitars of both John and Tom performing 'Commotion'. 'Lodi' proved to be a Country favourite, a tale of failed stardom. Stu Cook comes into his own with some fantastic walking bass-lines during 'Cross-Tie Walker'. And as a finale John added some very powerful slide guitar to a cover of 'The Night Time Is The Right Time', that Ray Charles made legendary. Here is a selection of the hits that I really love from the other CCR releases; 'Down On The Corner' and Leadbelly's 'The Midnight Special' (Willy & The Poor Boys), 'Run Through The Jungle' and 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' (Cosmo's Factory). This album takes it's title from CCR's drummer Doug Clifford's nickname; 'Cosmo'. Pendulum and Mardi Gras were latter albums that were a whole lot more country in flavour. Live In Europe is a live album worth avoiding. Overall the latter albums lacked the vitality of the earlier works. Whereas this didn't stop me buying all of them. John Fogerty is a legend.
