SERGE CHALOFF
SERGE CHALOFF
Blue Serge
(Capital/EMI)
Up until recently this classic from 1956 was only available in Japan, or as part of the Mosaic box set The Complete Serge Chaloff Sessions. The interesting feature in Serge's baritone saxophone delivery is his ability to make it effortlessly sound very much like a tenor. Serge was supported by an all-star line up on Blue Serge and that is Sonny Clark (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Blue Serge" opens with 'A Handful Of Stars' that exhibits Serge's wonderful dexterity. This is also ideal for Leroy's walking bass. Check out the bands fast paced stop and start breaks during Al Cohn's 'The Goof & I'. Late night romantics with love 'Thanks For The Memory'. 'All The Things You Are' is so smokey. Serge's own 'Susie's Blues' is an ideal showcase for Sonny's playing. The melancholy 'Stairway To The Stars' is performed ever so tenderly.

Blue Serge has been remastered to 20-bit super bit mapping and includes a bonus track not on the original vinyl i.e. 'How About You'. A personal note: I would like to thank the late Kurt Sanders for introducing me to this wonderful album.
