CLASSICS IV
CLASSICS IV
The Very Best Of
(Capital/EMI)
Like David Gate's 'Bread', Classics IV comprised of some of the best, and most in demand session musicians of their day (the Sixties). Most of their songs were written by the guitarist J.R.Cobb and producer/manager Buddy Buie. Other writers included Sharpe, Shapiro and Middlebrooks. The lead vocalist was Dennis Yost, who not only performed an amazing cover of Bobby Hebb's classic 'Sunny', but helped to make 'Stormy', 'Traces' and 'Spooky' classic hits. Santana had a major hit with a remake of 'Stormy', and Atlanta Rhythm Section (that was formed by Cobb, Dean Doughtry and Buie after the demise of the Classics IV) had a major hit with a remake of 'Spooky'. Atlanta Rhythm Section continued in that mould with such hits as 'So In To You' and 'Imaginary Lover' with Dean Doughtry on lead vocals (ex-Classics IV). If you have never heard of The Classics IV, you would have certainly heard their hits. I would describe them along with The Atlanta Rhythm Section as being the American version of Australia's Little River Band. One last thing: I've never found an album, or a web-site that has ever named the saxophone player for the Classics IV; well his name is Sam Anderson. And I think this is the true shame of the re-issue compilers. They have never ever given substantial information about The Classics IV. Maybe this will be of some help to you Classics IV fans out there.
