Disturbance
(Kog Transmissions)
Drum'n'bass outfit from the Kog stable. Short and Harvey met at intermediate school before meeting up again at audio engineering school and forming Concord Dawn after discovering a mutual love of drum'n'bass. Harvey has played drums in various hip-hoppy, ambient, acid jazz groups, while Short plays guitar for hardcore metallers Day One.

The second album from the Auckland duo follows quite swiftly from their debut release, and like all good sequels, this is definitely an improvement. Perhaps the biggest indication of the change is the cover - While the first effort has a simple blue and white cover, Disturbance has two cartoon robots floating in space, with the old cover seemingly far off in the background. An indication of a little more excitement and variety into the palette? YES - but not the change some might think. There's no resorting to guest vocalists, movies samples or scratches, only things have been taken up a notch. The 'maturing' of Evan and Matt sees a similar style of hard, urban drum'n'bass, only with a little more polish and spice. To the tracks: opener 'Cloud City' sets the scene with a slight ambient tech beginning, before the inevitable beats kick in. A nice groove. Up next is 'Succubus', and it's like the soundtrack to some weird Japanese sci-fi flick. A rolling entity that's also nice. Other highlights include 'The Drill' (actually quite mellow and nice), 'Black Friday' and the awesome 'Guardian Angel'. In fact all of the tracks are solid, making Disturbance a great purchase, with the nine tracks offering over an hour's musical fun. Whilst not a huge departure from their sound, the refinement makes it an excellent release, and they are as much their own category of noise as Pitch Black are. Drum'n'bass? Definitely, but they've taken their urban rolling disruptive sound into outer space. Decidedly nice and hard. Daddy Dainjah NZ Musician Magazine
