CYNTHIA CRANE & MIKE RENZI Smoky Bar Songs (Original Cast Label) The album title says it all; imagine you're in the corner of a great little bar (non-smoking according to the cover), swilling you're favourite drink, and on stage is this slinky-cool jazz singer crooning out such great lyrics, and she's got fantastic support. I don't mean her bra straps; no I mean Grady Tate, Chip Jackson, Jay Leonard, Jay Berliner, et al. It is such a pleasure to feel this ambience, and hear Cynthia's vocals adapt to the beautiful and subtle variants of the slow tempo jazz-blues classics. Cynthia's smoky favourites are 'Drinkin' Again', 'Something Cool', 'Scotch & Soda' and 'Angel Eyes'. You may have heard Dinah Washington, June Christy, Manhattan Transfer and others perform these great songs, but it is rare to get all these songs on one album, and sung with such feeling.
