FLOYD DIXON
Wake Up And Live
(Alligator)
Most people know Charles Brown, Louis Jordan & Jay McShann but only a select few are aware of the blues piano legend Floyd Dixon. Jake & Elwood covered his fifties hit 'Hey Bartender' in the movie The Blues Brothers. Jumping jive is where this cat is at, with a good dose of rock'n'roll blues thrown in. Discerning listeners will also pick the similarities between Floyd and Johnnie Johnson. Tenor saxophonist Eddie Synigal features extensively throughout this album; he was resident in B.B.King's band for ten years and has been Floyd's right hand man since. Although Wake Up & Live was recorded recently, Floyd and his crew used mostly fifties' equipment to capture his original sound. Very highly recommended.
