DOOBIE BROTHERS
The Captain And Me & Stampede
(WEA)
These are the rock years before they became the Michael McDonald pop band. Not knocking Michael, as his music was certainly very enjoyable, but this is the Tom Johnson/Patrick Simmons-Doobies that I really love. The Captain & Me and Stampede came out in 1973 & 1975 respectively.

My favourite songs from The Captain & Me are 'Long Train Runnin', that is a classic, and a concert favourite; 'Dark Eyed Cajun Woman' and 'South City Midnight Lady' that have country leanings, and share style similarities with the early Eagles; and 'Evil Woman' which is a real rocker. This album also yielded the hit 'China Grove', and although I liked this at the time of the albums release, it hasn't gone the distance with me.

I originally bought Stampede for just one song, and that is 'I Cheat The Hangman'. From this same album came the hit 'Take Me In Your Arms (Rock Me A Little While)'.

Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter who was in residence with Steely Dan at the time of The Captain & Me played pedal steel on these sessions, and joined the Doobie Brothers for the following album What Were Once Vices that gave us the hits 'Black Water' and 'Another Park, Another Sunday'. This is classic rock.
