CARL DOY The Piano By Candlelight Collection (Thom Marketing/Sony) Who could ever have predicted that an unscheduled performance by a world-class pianist in the lobby of the Regent Hotel in Auckland, New Zealand, back in 1987, would lead to the creation of a multi-million selling album? Yet that is exactly how Piano By Candlelight happened! Called in to play "at the last moment" one particular evening, Carl Doy found himself in not only appreciative, but inspired, company. Amongst the audience gathered in the lobby that night was Murray Thom, who had previously been Managing Director for CBS Records New Zealand. So impressed was Murray with Carl's playing that, there and then, he announced to his wife, Anne, "I'm going to sign that guy to a recording contract!" The "guy", as it turned out, was by no means your average pianist. As an honours student from the Royal College of Music in London, Carl Doy was already an exceptional pianist, performer and arranger. Out of that chance meeting has come a remarkable partnership, much to their mutual delight and the delight of millions of music lovers in over 40 countries.
