Dub Never Sleeps
(Kog Transmissions)
Dub Asylum is the work of former member of 'Hallelujah Picassos' Peter McLennan. Peter was in the Picassos from 1988 til 1995, when he left the band. They released two albums, Hateman in Love and Drinking with Judas, an ep and a bunch of singles. Peter also directed several music videos for the Picassos.

He has worked in the film and tv industry for the last few years, working on music videos, and has directed several videos featuring ex Picasso Bobbylon, guesting with 'Trip To The Moon'. He has also directed two documentaries, one on local music legend Chris Knox, called 'Songs Of You And Me; Chris Knox (1996) and Big Daze: Big Day Out 1997, both of which have screened on tv and at film festivals.

Peter is a freelance writer, for Pavement, Lava, North And South, Loose. He has been writing for various magazines (Stamp, Planet) since he was at art school, in the early 90's. He also co hosts an arts show on BFM, called The Culture Bunker.

The developing landscapes of dub continue to help people. Sounds that heal and teach don't have to be didactic to get a message across and that's what is Dub Never Sleeps.

Not enough good can be said of Dub Asylum's work here. The project of Peter McLennan with help from fellow Picassos Bobbylon and Johnnie Pain, and mixed by Joost Langeveld, works from a good many refreshing angles. Dub Never Sleeps is ushered in with the Tui whistle on Jump Along, and flows on like her liquid groove through a plethora of sound landscapes.

The trio of tracks that follow are almighty: 'Night of Chilly Blue' has the sweetest European night prowl on its swing, and 'Dick Dale In Outer Space' comes as a Latin dub plain, bolstered by pedal steel guitar. Then on 'R U Ready?' Bobbylon emerges again over a beat as solid as Westmere brown. And there are more places on the map. McLennan's possibilities here are endless, like Paulette's vocals on 'Patience'. Listen for the additional tinkering at Kog Transmissions. Johnnie Blades RIP IT UP
