EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER
EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER
Trilogy
(Victory/Universal)
This is classical-rock that became classic rock. At the time when Emerson, Lake & Palmer formed, they were already famous; Keith Emerson (keyboards) ex-The Nice, Greg Lake (vocals, guitars, bass) ex-King Crimson, and Carl Palmer (drums & assorted percussion) who was from the Atomic Rooster.

My favourite tracks from Trilogy are 'The Endless Enigma (parts 1 & 2)', 'Hoedown', Trilogy', 'Abaddon's Bolero' and 'From The Beginning'. Copeland's 'Hoedown' really romps along, and 'Abaddon's Bolero' is like a navy march, but with Ravel influences. The title track opens with some truly beautiful grand piano, and is a tale of seperation. Keith then tranforms 'Trilogy' from a gentle romance, into a powerhouse rocker. The apex of this amazing album is 'From The Beginning' that features Greg on acoustic guitars; then Greg adds a bluesy electric guitar solo, and Keith rounds 'From The Beginning' off with a melancholy electronic sequence.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer were to influence many groups including Electric Light Orchestra; and in the seventies many groups were trying their hand at classical crossover albums i.e. Procol Harum, Moody Blues, Yes (featuring Rick Wakeman), Renaissance (featuring Annie Haslam), and many others. This was a trend that was to resurface a little later with The Alan Parsons Project.
