ERNEST RANGLIN
ERNEST RANGLIN
Below The Bassline
(Island/Universal)
Ernest Ranglin is legendary as both a reggae and jazz guitarist. If you can imagine Kenny Burrell or Grant Green performing jazz guitar to a reggae beat then you've got an idea what Below The Bassline sounds like already. Ernest selected some of the most well known Jamaican classics for this album. Most reggae fans will recognise 'Congo Man' and 'King Tubby Meets The Rockers'. Ernest's quintet includes Ira Coleman, Idris Muhammad, and Gary Mayone, with Monty Alexander on piano. Special guest Roland Alphonso (tenor & soprano saxophones for The Skatalites) features on The Skatalites brilliant 'Ball Of Fire'. The Skatalites album Ball Of Fire also featured Ernest on guitar. Below The Bassline isn't just jazz, and it isn't just reagge, it's a fusion of both, and it's a highly infectious album.
