ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG
ELLA FITZGERALD & LOUIS ARMSTRONG
Porgy & Bess
(Verve/Universal)
At the time of this recording (1957) Ella & Louis could respectively be called the King & Queen of jazz. Okay Charlie Parker and Miles Davis might have had something to say about this. Yet at that time this couple were the most recorded jazz musicians.

Porgy & Bess stands as one of George Gershwin's greatest compositions. Add lyricists Ira Gershwin and Edwin DuBose Heyward, and George has a masterpiece. The 'Overture' is one of the most memorable orchestrations; as it is both melancholy and nostalgic. The classic 'Summertime' not only features the wonderful vocals of Ella & Louis, but also includes Louis playing some of the most moving trumpet playing I've ever heard. 'I Wants To Stay Here', 'My Man's Gone Now', 'I Got Plenty Of Nothin', 'Bess, You Is My Woman Now', 'There's a Boat Dat's Leavin' Soon for New York', 'It Ain't Necessarily So' are all concert favourites that Ella & Louis really do justice to, with the excellent arrangements of Russ Garcia.

There have been hundreds of renditions of this classic work, and it sits well as blues, jazz and as a opera. Absolutely timeless!
