More A Legend Than A Band
(Rounder/Elite)
This country/folk album was recorded way back in 1972 and what was once lost recordings have finally seen the light of day. Most of the members i.e. Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Joe Ely & Butch Hancock have gone onto legendary status hence the album's title. This is rural country at it's best. This is the country music that was around before World War II.

'Dallas' & 'Tonight I'm Gonna Go Downtown' are both Gilmore classics, and most Texas country fans know them well. They should have been hits back in 1973. Back then Jimmie's voice was whole lot smoother. Adding a rich folk texture to these ballads is Steve Wesson on musical saw, that sounds remarkably like hawaiian steel guitar.

Although Joe Ely has no writing credits on this album; Joe makes his presence known on harmonica, dobro and acoustic guitar; and he shares harmony vocals with Gilmore on Willie Nelson's 'One Day At A Time'; which is very beautiful ballad.

This was the album that Hancock first recorded his 'You'll Never See Me Cry', and it's a surprise to hear a young Gilmore singing it. Mind you Hancock & Ely did cover Gilmore's 'Dallas' in later years.

'Jole Blon' is pure bluegrass. Included here are 'The Heart You Left Behind' & 'Keeper Of The Mountain' that were written by another legendary Texan; country-blues singer Angela Strehli. 'Stars In My Life' & 'One More Road' are both Hancock compositions, and are reminiscent of the early John Denver country recordings.

Also check out Gilmore's new album One Endless Night. I personally see Jimmie as the new Townes Van Zandt.
