THE FRONT LAWN
THE FRONT LAWN
Songs From The Front Lawn
(Virgin/EMI)
The Front Lawn were the group that Don McGlashan was in before the Mutton Birds. It was a collaboration with Harry Sinclair and was basically a sort of sketch show where Don was in charge of the music and Harry in charge of the drama side. They mixed together songs and acting, as well as producing several succesful short films. Don had came from working with the band Blam Blam Blam and had already written a few sucessful songs like "Don't fight it Marsha.."

The Front Lawn became popular due to their television broadcasts and also their tours which involved them doing their mix of songs and sketches which they performed globally. Notably they won many award and plaudits whilst starring at the Edinburgh Fringe and took on tours to America and through Europe as well as their homeland of New Zealand. Their music was a very strong part of their act and ranged from the hilarious "How ya doing" to the thought provoking "Andy". They received high acclaim from the critics wherever they went. They made three short films too, "The Reason for Breakfast" "Walk Short"and "The Lounge Bar". These again won many awards. Also Harry & Don added artist Jennifer Ward-Lealand for the performance of the Front Lawn show "The One That Got Away".

As well as their TV and film work they decided to release 2 albums comprising of some of the songs they had made for the Front Lawn shows which they imaginatively entitled Songs from the Front Lawn and then More songs from the Front Lawn. Despite the less than imaginitive names for the albums, both proved to be very popular with their fans.

But in the end the pair were pulling in different directions, and they thought that they couldn't keep adding more and more dates to their tours as their popularity increased. Harry wanted to concentrate on his film work and Don wanted to concentrate on music and went on to form the Mutton Birds. And so the Front Lawn stopped being mowed in 1990, leaving a legacy of some incredible songs, gripping live shows and award winning films, and 2 albums of the best music from those shows.
