ANJA GARBAREK
Balloon Mood
(BMG Norway)
Daughter of jazz man Jan, Anja Garbarek approaches her music with eyes tight shut and imagination wide open. Hers is a strange canvas, one splattered with myriad unconnected sounds, hues and moods, the end result so unavoidably abstract that Damien Hirst could pickle it and call it art. Singing like an underwater Rickie Lee Jones, while creating rambling soundscapes reminiscent of Laurie Anderson and, in its mad percussion, Tom Waits, Balloon Mood is willfully eccentric and consistently bizarre-those fond of whistling along will find little inspiration here. But despite an overtly self-conscious artistic bent, Garbarek has made a record that's never less than highly intriguing; wine bar muzak for aliens. Q Magazine May 1999 ****
Ed's note: If you are lucky to find this wonderous album in a store near you BUY IT! The journey begins with 'Beyond My Control', Anja is very much like Bjork and Tori Amos in the same instance. 'I.C.U.' claims "I'm not asking for much", and I can imagine Anja being quite a tease. 'Just One Of Those Days' has to be Fiona Apple on drugs. 'Picking Up The Pieces' has Prince written all over it. I guess you get the idea that this album is all over the place, yet mere words couldn't adequately describe the creation of this young musical genius. Anja you get ten out of ten for a very stimulating album!
