SCOTT HAMILTON
After Hours
(Concord/Elite)
After Hours opens with Tommy Flanagan performing his own 'Beyond The Bluebird', that is delightfully jazz'n'blues, that truly compliments Hamilton's earthy tenor playing. Dizzy Gillespie's 'Woody 'N' You' is given a tango flavouring, and Benny Carter's 'Blues In My Heart' sounds rather reminiscent of 'Black Coffee'. The grand finale is from the original king of bebop's repertoire, and that is a bopping version of Charlie 'Bird' Parker's 'Steeplechase'. This is the best album Scott Hamilton has put together in a long time; and with Bob Cranshaw on bass and Lewis Nash on drums how could he fail?
