HERBIE HANCOCK
Gershwin's World
(Verve/Universal)
A tribute from one genius to another! The Overture is 'Fascinating Rhythm', that is given a percussive arrangement, that leads into 'It Ain't Necessarily So'. This features an all-star lineup, that also introduces the delectable muted trumpet playing of Eddie Henderson. Delightful and yet barely recognizable is Joni Mitchell performing 'The Man I Love' and 'Summertime'. Both of these brilliant renditions feature Wayne Shorter on saxophone. 'Here Come De Honey Man' is wonderfully moody. As a bonus Herbie has added three non-Gershwin compositions to compliment the overall flavour of Gerswin's World; they are W.C. Handy's 'St. Louis Blues', Duke Ellington's 'Cotton Tail', and Ravel's 'Concerto For Piano And Orchestra, 2nd Movement'. Stevie Wonder features on harmonica on both 'Summertime and 'St. Louis Blues'; and on 'St. Louis Blues Stevie sings and scats his way through this beautiful blues melody. One of the most memorable songs on Gerswin's World is 'Prelude In C# Minor' featuring soprano singing sensation Kathleen Battle. Herbie's arrangements of these timeless classics will have you listening to this magnificent album again and again.
