SARA HICKMAN
Equal Scary People
(WEA/Elektra)
Sara is an Austin Texas native and her singing style is a delightful blend of folk, country and pop.

Equal Scary People opens with an intimate love ballad that features the ingenious subtle use of a garden hose being whirled around Sara's head; this creates an ambience that I've never heard in a song before...very clever. 'Last Night Was A Big Rain' is a very catchy folksy song that paints you an aural picture that allows your imagination to visualise. Slide guitar, percussion and harmonica give you that train ride sensation during '500X(The Train Song). The title track reveals our hidden sides. The hose makes a return during James Brown's classic 'This Is A Man's World'. Sara's rendition is beautifully acoustic with light dashings of electric guitar towards the finish. 'Meant To Be' is almost tango, almost Spanish, and showcases Sara's incredible vocal range and brilliant timing.

I can't for the life of me understand why this amazing artist isn't an International sensation. She shares music style similarities to Edie Brickell and the early music of Sheryl Crow

'I Wish I Were A Princess' has a Tex-Mex flavour, and this is quite understandable considering where Sara comes from. 'Under The Sycamore Tree' features acoustic guitars and violin and brings to mind Pee Wee King and Stephane Grappelli.

This album was released in 1989 and has stood the test of time...otherwise why would I have reviewed it now in the year 2001? I've included Sara's web-page (Dreamery) link with the big album cover.
