GUSTAV HOLST: The Planets James Levine: Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus (DG/Universal) Truly the greatest recording of this masterpiece to date. Mind you apart from the delightfully pompous 'Mars, the Bringer of War', the vibrant 'Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity', and the colourful 'Uranus, the Magician'; the slower works are not exactly to my personal tastes on how they should be performed. 'Venus, the Bringer of Peace', 'Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age', and 'Neptune, the Mystic' require more delicacy and feeling. Overall this is a well arranged masterpiece, and with James at the helm the CSO give this work all the dynamics and range required. Pure bliss!Gazz Click on album image to see larger album cover
