IRON BUTTERFLY
IRON BUTTERFLY
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida
(Rhino/WEA)
This was Iron Butterfly's second album after their debut Heavy. Founding members, organist/vocalist Doug Ingle and drummer Ron Bushy dropped guitarist Danny Weiss, bassist Jerry Penrod and vocalist Darryl DeLoach out of the band and recruited 17 year old guitarist Erik Brann and bassist Lee Dorman.

Both Weiss & Penrod went off to become members of Paul Rothchild's dream band 'Rhinoceros', that never quite made the mark. Denny then went onto a successful career as a session musician.

The title of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida came about due to the fact that Doug Ingle was so stoned that he couldn't properly pronounce its intended title 'In the Garden of Eden'.

The title track laid the foundations for what would become known as hard-rock. Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin have both obviously taken something from this at some time.

The real difference between the live and studio versions (both included here) is basically techinique and duration. My pick is still the 17 minute studio version, as the live version is sloppy (and although Brann shines), and it doesn't really cut it.
