WILLI JONES
WILLI JONES
Willi Jones
(Geffen)
What a find this was back in 1990. Willi Jones was and still is a virtual unknown, which is sad as she is a real talent. Geffen Records hired the talented Bernie Leadon (Eagles), Bob Glaub (John Prine-Don Henley), J.D. Souther, Eric Johnson, Roger Greenawalt, percussionists Paulinho Da Costa and Lenny Castro, and special guest vocalist Willie Dixon (d.1992).

'Hey Hey' is the opener and it is a real Southern rocker. 'Dessie Mae's Last Words' strikes me as a rocking tribute. 'Love Me Up' would make a great show opener. 'Cages & Walls' is a soft intimate love ballad that tells a tale of frustration. 'No Passion' reeks of the Nashville sound and would have got quite a bit of airplay in those parts. John Glover's 'Where My City Stood' is sensative and acoustic. A truly beautiful song of protest, and features John on guitar. 'Southern Hospitality' is truly Willi's song, and would have made a great title for the album. 'So Long, Mary Jane' is a catchy number featuring guitarists Erik Johnson and Jeff Pevar, and my guess is that the subject matter of the song is the famous weed. 'Long Legged Goddess' is so sexual. This earthy rocker features Willie Dixon on vocals, with Stanley Behrends on harmonica. Almost gospel in flavour is Roger Greenawalt's 'Ain't It A Shame' and the song style reminds me of Karla Bonoff and Bonnie Raitt. You go south again with 'Livin' On Change' that is a real foot stomper. Finishing off this great album is 'Santa Ana' and J.D Souther shares vocals while Willi plays some really beautiful piano.

Niko Bolas (worked with Neil Young, Warren Zevon, REM, Mike Scott...,) and Roscoe Beck (Joe Ely, Eric Johnson, Robben Ford...,) produced Willi's fantastic album which I am hoping will come back into print.
