TAJ MAHAL
Phantom Blues
(Private Music/BMG)
Taj Mahal is a true master of the blues style having covered every aspect of it from traditional to modern blues.

Phantom Blues is one of the most consistant albums Taj has ever put out, and it's not hard to enjoy every track on it. Taj wrote the folksy 'Lovin In My Baby's Arms' that would sit well in Bob Dylan's repertoire, and this features Mike Campbell (Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers) on 12 string acoustic guitar. 'Cheatin' On You' is a cheeky song and a pay back. 'The Hustle Is On' is pure rock'n'roll. My favourite track on Phantom Blues is 'Here In The Dark' that is real rock-blues, and features the unmistakable guitar sounds of Eric Clapton. Jon Cleary is Taj's piano player, and he features extensively on Phantom Blues. His brilliant 'Fanning The Flames' features Dean Parks on lead guitar, and 'Fanning The Flames' was a song that he also recorded recently with Maria Muldaur. A terrific R&B number is 'I Need Your Loving', and this features Bonnie Raitt, it's just like old times. Taj appeared on Bonnies Taking My Time album many years ago. 'I Need Your Loving' also features 'Sweet Pea' Atkinson and Johnny Lee Schell, that have worked often with Bonnie. Jessie Hill's 'Ooh Poo Pah Doo' is revived in the true R&B style of Ike & Tina Turner. Doc Pomus' 'Lonely Avenue' is a song that seems to be getting a bit of attention at the mo, and I love this version, but prefer Van Morrison's rendition from Too Long In Exile. Taj can really sing soul; check out 'Don't Tell Me' (Pat McClaughlin), 'What Am I Living For' and 'Were Gonna Make It'. Stunning! Dave Barthlomew and Fats Domino's 'Let The Four Winds Blow' is faithfully revived in Creole rock'n'roll fashion. Eric Clapton has always been a major fan of Freddie King, and here he gets to perform the solo on Sonny Thompson's and Freddie King's '(You've Got To) Love Her With A Feeling'. Awesome! 'The Car Of Your Dreams' is a song a few of us can identify with. Bit of a laugh really.

In the last ten years Taj hasn't looked back. He has hit album after hit album. Not only is he a consistant writer and performer, but he knows how to put together great albums and musicians.
