Mahler: Symphony No. 4
Boulez, Bance, Preucil, et al
(Universal/DG)
A brilliant recording by Pierre Boulez,
and The Cleveland Orchestra, this is the
most recent of many interpretations of the
last of the Wunderhorn symphonies, a
beautiful lyrical work with a folklore
theme. The rich depth of this recording
leans less to the woody sound that
pervaded previous orchestral renditions.
The effect can be likened to a very human
journey from crawling, through
childhood, to adulthood, and then to the
heavens. The finale showcases soprano
Juliane Banse singing 'Sehe Behaglich:
Wir Geniessen Die Himmlischen Freuden
(We Enjoy Heaven's Delights)'. Although
Mahler wrote the aria for an earlier work,
it fits perfectly here as a breathtaking
climax.
